MEET LARISA OLESOVA, INCOMING ALC MEMBER A!
Larisa Olesova

I graduated from Purdue University with a PhD in learning, design, and technology in 2011. Prior to my study at Purdue University, I received my master’s degree in English and literature and a doctoral degree in education from the North-Eastern Federal University in Siberia, Russia. Teaching has been one of the most important parts of my professional career for more than 20 years both in Russia and in the United States. I have implemented online collaborative learning opportunities between classes in Russia and the United States. I have been a member of TESOL since 1999. I have served as a moderator and coordinator of Becoming a Webhead (BAW), one of the Electronic Village online professional training sessions at TESOL. I have served as the president and as the past president of Yakut TESOL. As the president of Yakut TESOL, I collaborated with other TESOL affiliates in Russia. My interests include (a) nonnative speakers of English (students and instructors) in online environments, (b) online cross-cultural communication, (c) online collaborative learning, (d) online project-based learning, (e) online content-based instruction, (f) teacher training, (g) distance education, and (h) technology integration in online asynchronous environments. I have also been involved in affiliate sessions at the Annual TESOL Convention and Exhibit since 2003. I also conducted a workshop for the Affiliate Newsletter Editors’ session in 2004 and participated in the affiliate meetings at the annual convention in 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009. I published updates from Yakut TESOL in the Affiliate News in 2008, in Essential Teacher in 2010, and in other TESOL affiliate newsletters, including “Teaching English in the Republic of Sakha” in the Indiana TESOL Newsletter in 2003 and “Yakutia Is a Land of Diversity” in the Three Rivers TESOL Newsletter in 1999. My interest and motivation to serve as Member A include a vision and willingness to help non-U.S. TESOL affiliates in remote areas like Yakut TESOL remain active in TESOL. I believe that the affiliates residing in remote areas with limited access to information from TESOL should receive special attention from TESOL in order to increase and sustain the affiliate members who still have great interest and motivation to learn and teach English. As Member A of the Affiliate Leadership Council, which represents all affiliates, I will help represent the growing non-U.S. membership. I believe I will be able to promote TESOL ideals and core values by using my 22 years of teaching experience, 12 years of active involvement in TESOL’s community of practice, and bilingual/multicultural background. Please feel free to contact me.
