Introducing TESOL Sudan

TESOL-Sudan is a nonprofit professional organization for teachers of English based in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. It is the only active organization for teachers of English in the country and was founded in 2009 by Fawatih Nagila collaboratively with a steering committee composed of seven volunteers: Fawatih Nagila, Sawsan Abdelmagid, Sawsan Fouad, Prof. Sua’ad Sulaiman, Rula Ghazal, Dr. Albadri Abbas, and Dr. Aymen Elsheikh. We have become officially registered with the Humanitarian Aid Commission, the local body governing NGOs’ work, as a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in May 2010.

Our General Assembly convenes every 2 years to amend the constitution and elect a new board. The current board members are Dr. Ishraga Bashir, president; Dr. Aymen Elsheikh, vice president; Rasha Elbashir Salih, executive secretary and acting public relations officer; Dr. Albadri Abbas, academic affairs officer; Dr. Mohamed Elamin Elshingeety, administrative affairs officer; Dr. Salah Eldouma, treasurer; and Oula Elsharif, newsletter editor.

As an NGO, we are funded by membership fees as well as donations and sponsorships of participants interested in teaching and/or learning English. As a TESOL affiliate, and considering our local context and needs, we are adopting the mission, values, and vision of TESOL International through maintaining professional expertise in English language teaching in order to develop ELT strategies, practice, as well as providing high-quality professional development opportunities utilizing both local and expatriate expertise.
