NEWS FROM NYS TESOL
Sarah Elia, Anne Henry, & Fran Olmos, NYS TESOL, New York, USA

New York State TESOL (NYS TESOL) is an association of professionals concerned with the education of English language learners at all levels of public and private education in New York State. As an affiliate of TESOL International Association, we are proud to share the following announcements about our organization.

We held our 45th Annual Conference on November 13-14, 2015 in White Plains, New York. There were many wonderful speakers but most notably, Dr. Andy Curtis, President of TESOL International Association. We were grateful that he was able to attend our conference. The attendees were thrilled to have him as one of the plenary speakers and thoroughly enjoyed his humorous yet insightful presentation. We were also particularly honored that he wrote an article on his President’s blog about his experience at the conference.

NYS TESOL has been been busy planning several events that take place throughout the state so that all members can attend. The 37th Annual Applied Linguistics Winter Conference, Meeting of the Minds: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Language and Education, was held March 5th at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, in  NYC and featured over 30 presentations including plenary speaker Dr. Drew S. Fagan. A NYS TESOL signature Salon entitled Co-Teaching: Successes and Challenges was held in the Capital Region on February 25. This event allowed groups of teachers to discuss issues that are important in the field, in a small and intimate forum. The Long Island ESOL (LIESOL) Conference, The Changing Landscape of Instruction For ELLs, will be held on April 16th at Molloy College in Rockville Center. In addition, our sister organization, New York State Association of Bilingual Education (NYSABE) is having its Annual Conference on May 21st.

NYS TESOL’s 46th Annual Conference will be held November 4-5th 2016 in Syracuse, New York. This year’s theme is Collaboration in the Classroom and Beyond. The Call for Proposals is now open. We encourage everyone to send in a proposal. We will be recognizing winners of our Student Essay Contest and several of our members at an awards ceremony.  For a complete list of upcoming events, please visit our website www.nystesol.org.

Finally, NYS TESOL is looking forward to attending the 2016 TESOL International Convention in Baltimore. We will have an affiliate booth on Wednesday, April 7th, 12:30-1:30. Please come by and say hello! We also plan a reception for Thursday, April 8th, 4:00-6:00 at a nearby restaurant and invite all NYS TESOL members to attend.

Have a great time in Baltimore. We hope to see you there!
