Dear Readers,

Welcome to the winter-spring issue of AL Forum, newsletter for the Applied Linguistics Interest Section! First of all, we hope you are doing well in your teaching and learning communities. In anticipation of the TESOL convention in Spring 2023, this issue brings you leadership updates summarizing past and future ALIS activities and three thought-provoking articles representing diverse areas of applied linguistics and its applications to the classroom.

The first article, by Julie Lake, shows how a culturally responsive approach to teaching can make English language classrooms more equitable, outlining recommendations and strategies for avoiding common pitfalls. In the second article, Silvana Dushku demonstrates how findings of a comprehensive needs assessment can serve to inform the creation of a new oral communication curriculum in one IEP program and shares useful points for similar efforts in other contexts. Lastly, in the feature article by our current chair Sun-Young Shin, we learn about the key takeaways from the recent ALIS webinar, in which Kazyua Saito, the author of one of the most popular TESOL Quarterly articles, answered important questions from the readers and webinar attendees. These articles represent excellent examples of how research can directly inform pedagogical practice.

In leadership updates, ALIS Chair Sun-Young Shin shares a letter in which he outlines key accomplishments of the year and includes details of two Academic Intersections (one with English for Specific Purposes (ESP)-IS and the other with International Teaching Assistant (ITA)-IS) that will take place at TESOL 2023. Furthermore, in his own letter, our Chair-Elect Rashad Ahmed introduces himself as the ALIS chair for the upcoming year and shares details of the ALIS Academic Session for TESOL 2023. Please check out these letters for full details on topics and speakers.

We hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to seeing some of you at the convention this spring!

Cheers,

Natalia and Heather
