In her June column, Michelle Jackson shares a classroom activity for teaching the appropriate structure for modal verbs—like might, should, may, would—to college-level introductory ELLs.
Prepare your students for the advanced thinking required by the Common Core, advanced education, and careers—all by doing less in the classroom.
Learn about the award-winning research of Dr. Yasuko Kanno, which looks at ELL access to high-level education.

More Features

ELLs often have trouble knowing how to pronounce the –ed endings of past-tense words. Use this quick, interactive activity with your intermediate-level students to help them engage as listeners before they make choices as speakers. Incorporating personal details into the structure of the activity also adds some fun.

Check out these activities, for low intermediate through advanced learners, from the revised New Ways in Teaching Writing. The activities focus on various aspects of ESL writing, including expanding sentences using clear vocabulary and particular grammatical patterns, teaching students to be aware of cohesive devices and sequences in paragraphs, and reflecting on and writing about a novel.
