ACADEMIC SESSION
Reflecting on Genre: Incorporating Genre in the Teaching of Writing
Thursday, 7 April , 3 pm–4:45 pm, Room 319
In this academic session, experts in the study of genre discuss
reasons and ways for teachers to incorporate genre when teaching
writing. From multiple theoretical perspectives, the presenters discuss
applications of genre theory, aspects of genre to consider, and
strategies for using genre approaches in teaching writing.

INTERSECTION with Secondary Schools IS
Postsecondary Writing: Reflecting Future Writing Expectations
Wednesday, 6 April, 9:30 am–11:15 am, Room 330
Students write throughout high school, yet postsecondary
writing may differ considerably. This panel considers transitions from
high school writing to writing in higher education or the workplace.
Panelists discuss students’ perspectives on writing expectations, common
issues faced when adjusting to academic discourse, and writing
development for career transitions.

INTERSECTION with Higher Education IS
Getting on the Same Page: Aligning Writing Standards
Friday, 8 April, 1 pm–2:45 pm, Room 330
ELLs learn writing at various stages in their development, yet
objectives vary. This panel discusses the approaches of schools, IEPs,
writing programs, and college content classes toward writing. Panelists
discuss key elements from their perspectives as well as successful
strategies for aligning objectives to ensure smoother transitions for
students.

INTERSECTION with Adult Education IS and Refugee Concerns IS
Teaching Writing to Adult Low Literacy Students: Research to Practice
Friday, 8 April, 1 pm–2:45 pm, Room 321
Adult students with limited or interrupted formal education
(SLIFE) in their first language face many challenges as they work toward
literacy in English. Researchers and practitioners come together to
discuss instructional needs, with special emphasis on learning to write.
Participants gain connections to SLIFE research as well as
instructional techniques.

At the annual Open Meeting, members and friends of SLWIS come
together to discuss the past year’s events, plan for next year’s TESOL
convention, and explore options for events in the upcoming year. Come

Social Event: An Evening With Friends of Second Language Writing

Restaurant
Following the SLWIS Open Meeting, we will gather to celebrate
advances in the field of second language writing, to renew
acquaintances, to form new research alliances, and to welcome new
members into the discipline. Stop by the SLWIS booth in the Exhibit Hall
or attend the Open Meeting to get maps and other information about this
informal gathering organized by Friends of Second Language
Writing.

Ryan T. Miller, SLWIS Chair-Elect, is an
assistant professor in the English Department at Kent State University,
where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in L2 reading and
writing, SLA, and language teaching methods. His research investigates
development of discipline-specific writing skills and genre knowledge,
and dual-language involvement and support of reading and its
subskills. |
