Greetings SLWIS Members!
Happy 2022! I welcome you to this pre-convention issue of SLW News! The 2022 TESOL Convention in Pittsburgh is around the corner, and we are looking forward to meeting you all (either in person or virtually) in many professional and educational sessions that this multiday event has prepared for us. During the Convention, we will be sending updates from our professional community on our Facebook page, so stay tuned.
In this issue, Second Language Writing Interest Section (SLWIS) Chair Sarah Henderson Lee provides an overview of 2022 Convention sessions sponsored by the SLWIS, including an academic session and intersection sessions. She also encourages SLWIS members to participate in book club discussions organized by the members of the SLWIS steering committee.
This issue features two articles related to data-driven learning and teaching. The first one, by Gözde Durgut, presents an overview of empirical research in data-driven-learning based pedagogy and provides suggestions for teachers who would like to implement data-driven-learning approaches in their classroom. The second article, written by Anh Dang, Nina Conrad, and Shelley Staples, discusses how corpus-based materials can be used in teaching L2 writing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This issue also includes a review written by Sean Farrell of the book Second language writing in transitional spaces: Teaching and learning across educational contexts by Grujicic-Alatriste and Grundleger (2020). We encourage you to share your experiences with print, digital, and online materials that you use for your teaching and research. So, if you have recently read a book on L2 writing or used an L2 writing textbook or other materials in your class, consider reviewing them for our newsletter.
Our regular section, Graduate Student Spotlight, features Angela Hakim, a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Linguistics at King’s College London. We always enjoy hearing from graduate students in the field, and we encourage master’s and doctoral students to contribute to this section of SLW News. For more information, please contact the editor of the section Elena Taylor.
I would like to express my gratitude to all contributors to this issue of the newsletter. I would also like to thank you all, our readers, for your continuous support of SLW News and our professional community. I hope you will enjoy this issue, and I encourage you to send us your submissions for future issues. We hope this newsletter can be a friendly venue for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students alike, and we always look for articles of a wide range of genres, including research reports, teaching insights and pedagogical ideas, and reflections on your own professional development. The deadline for submissions for the fall issue of SLW News is June 30. For more information, please visit the Submission Guidelines in this issue.
Happy reading!
Warm wishes,
Elena Taylor
