Greetings SLWIS Members!
Happy new academic year and welcome to the October 2022 issue of SLW News! This newsletter starts with an announcement. Two members of SLWIS, Sidury Christiansen and Svetlana Koltovskaia, have come on board as co-editors of SLW News. They both have made great contributions to our interest section, and we are happy to welcome them on the editorial staff. Thank you, Sidury and Svetlana!
In this fall issue of the newsletter, SLWIS Chair Estela Ene describes 2023 TESOL Conventions sessions sponsored by our interest sections.
This issue features Jimalee Sowell, a PhD candidate in Composition and Applied Linguistics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, who examines the utility of three principles of current-traditional writing pedagogy, namely higher-order over lower-order concerns, non-directive-conferencing, and a dismissive approach to editing with English language learners (ELLs). In her article, Jimalee argues that these principles do not consider the needs of ELLs, and thus, she calls for a more flexible approach. We hope you will enjoy reading this article! If you have work you would like to share with our community, please contact us at: slwisnewsletter@gmail.com.
We are also thrilled to resume our section “Meet the Expert.” This issue features the interview with Dr. Betsy Gilliland, a Professor at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa in Honolulu, conducted by Svetlana Koltovskaia, our co-editor. In this interview, Dr. Gilliland shares how she got into the field of SLW, talks about her current research, and offers advice on how to develop expertise in SLW. Let us know if you are interested in knowing more about an expert or would like to contribute an interview of a senior advisor and mentor in the field.
In this issue, we are also presenting a review of the book “International perspectives on creative writing in second language education: Supporting language learners' proficiency, identity, and creative expression” (Chamcharatsri & Iida, 2022) written by Ghadah Benitez, a graduate of the University of South Florida. We are always interested in hearing your thoughts about recent books on L2 writing, and we encourage you to share your opinions with the SLW News readers. For more information about book reviews, contact the co-editors at slwisnewsletter@gmail.com.
To conclude, we would like to express our gratitude to all of you--members of our professional community, for your involvement and continuous support. We are also grateful for the authors who contributed to this issue of the newsletter. We encourage all of you to share your teaching and research insights with the SLWIS community in the next (pre-convention) issue of SLW News, which will be published in March 2023. The deadline for submissions to this issue is January 10, 2023. For more information, please visit the Submission Guidelines in this issue.
We hope you enjoy this issue. Happy reading and have a great academic year!
Sincerely,
Elena Taylor
