LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Sidury Christiansen, University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, USA

Dear Colleagues,

I am honored and excited to serve as the incoming chair of the Second Language Writing Interest Section (SLW-IS). As we look forward to the coming year, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my vision for the SLW-IS and some of the exciting initiatives that we will be undertaking.

SLWIS has always been committed to advancing scholarship and pedagogy in second language writing. We seek to create a supportive community of educators and scholars who share a common interest in exploring the challenges and opportunities associated with teaching and learning writing in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts. To that end, we will continue to organize events and professional development opportunities that bring together scholars, educators, and students who work in this field.

In the coming year, we will focus on fostering greater collaboration and dialogue among members from diverse backgrounds and from contexts that are underrepresented. We will revamp our online forum in the MyTESOL site, where members can exchange ideas, share resources, and connect with colleagues from around the world. We will continue to organize webinars and online workshops on topics of interest to our members, including AI, multimodality, CLA, and linguistic justice.

Another important initiative for SLWIS is to provide a platform for showcasing the work of our members. We will be publishing our newsletter that will feature review articles, research briefs, and commentary on topics related to second language writing. We invite members to submit their work, which may take the form of research articles, teaching tips, reflections, all which can be multimodal pieces (videos, infographics, slides, etc.).

Finally, I would like to encourage all SLWIS members to participate actively in our community. We welcome your ideas, feedback, and contributions to our initiatives. Please feel free to reach out to me or any member of the leadership team if you have any questions or suggestions.

I look forward to working with you all in the coming year and beyond. Together, we can continue to advance the field of second language writing and create meaningful impact in the lives of our students.

Sincerely,

Sidury Christiansen, Ph.D. - SLWIS Chair
