Dear Bilingual Basics Newsletter Readers,

We are greeting you all by wishing a happy, healthy and prolific 2021. We are proud to announce the publication of the Spring 2021 issue of the Bilingual Basics — the newsletter of the Bilingual-Multilingual Education Interest Section (B-MEIS).

This issue’s theme is “Online schooling and Translanguaging”. We have 10 manuscripts, which were reviewed by the co-editors Islam M. Farag, Huseyin Uysal, Matthew Nall, and Kirti Kapur. The contributions in this edition address the issues of bilingualism and focus on translanguaging. They raise questions about the role of parents and teachers in fostering bilingual education.

Given the ongoing challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, the authors’ insights are timely and might resonate with many educators, researchers, parents and other stake-holders all around the world. We view the knowledge and perspectives from each contribution as valuable and important prompters for approaching the key issues related to the whole continuum of multilingual education during the “new normal”. Along with the authors, we invite each of you, our readers, to take a moment, reflect on your experiences and reconsider the “normalized” realities within your professional or educational life.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the Bilingual Basics and continue the discussion within your context. Lastly, we want to take this opportunity to encourage you to consider contributing to the upcoming issue(s).
