MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

María Rossana Ramírez, Guayaquil, Ecuador

Dear HEIS Community,

This is María Rossana Ramírez. I am the chair of the Higher Education Interest Section (HEIS) for the 2019–2020 period. It is my great pleasure to serve this academic interest section. Let me start by thanking the TESOLers that attended the HEIS business meeting. It was again very nice to see and meet with you.

I would also like to introduce our HEIS leaders:

· Maria Ammar, Chair-Elect

· María Rossana Ramírez, Chair

· Kevin Martin, Past Chair.

We agreed to set goals for this period to guide our efforts in assisting you. There are three main goals we will focus our attention on:

a. Increase member engagement.

b. Review and revise bylaws.

c. Increase professional development sessions.

For the first goal, a survey will be sent to the community. Your participation in filling it out will be appreciated. For the second, the last revision of the bylaws was done in 2011, so we consider it pertinent to update them with the current trends and changes of TESOL. Lastly, professional learning and research are part of TESOL’s mission, and we should pay attention to these two aspects.

Feel free to add to this list by posting your ideas in our myTESOL forum.

Regards,

María Rossana Ramírez

Chair, TESOL Higher Education Interest Section

Maria Rossana Ramirez-Avila is the coordinator of the Languages Master Program at Casa Grande University in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
