Dear Colleagues,

Cheers to another issue of the TEIS Newsletter dedicated to teacher leadership to kick off the new year!

In this issue we celebrate voices from Israel, Hungary, the United States, New Zealand and China, as leaders from around the globe share their expertise and experiences with regards to the merger of teacher education and leadership.

Julia Schlam Salman offers ideas for endowing pre-service teachers with leadership skills in the socio-ethnically complex realities of Jerusalem, Israel while Beatrix Price explores the opportunities English Language Teachers’ Associations offer as sources for personal growth and leadership. Veronica Aguiñaga crystalizes the importance of preparing preservice teachers to differentiated instruction to meet the needs of English language learners and Jing Yixuan introduces us to the world of language teacher professional development for task-based language teaching in the least developed region of northwestern China via presenting the approach of ‘collaborative teaching’ developed by the author and the local teachers.

You can also read about our interim Community Manager and find out what his goals for TEIS are. Our Conventional Schedule is also out, though this may be subject to changes. You’ll find our line-up really exciting! We also have an interesting idea in Voices, from Slobodan Kelečević who reminds us of the need to refresh our teaching and explains its importance.

We hope this issue will serve as inspiration for us all in growing as teacher educators and in guiding others into becoming assiduous and zealous leaders.

Bridget Schvarcz is the head of the English Unit at Afeka Academic College of Engineering and a teacher educator for the Israeli Ministry of Education, Department of Professional Development of Teaching Staff. She currently serves as the chair of the English Teachers’ Association of Israel – a proud TESOL affiliate – and as an editor of the TEIS Newsletter.

Khanh-Duc Kuttig teaches English language in the Department of English at the University of Siegen. She is Events Coordinator for ELTA-Rhine in Germany and former TESOL/NGL Teacher of the Year.
