Leadership Updates
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hyunsoo Hur, PhD, Faculty Development Specialist, The Defense Language Institute

Greetings everyone!

The Teacher Education Interest Section (TEIS) is pleased to present another edition of the newsletter. You will find updates about our new leadership, as well as articles on various topics related to English teacher and teacher education in American and non-American contexts.

Marna Broekhoff’s article “How Indigenous Writers and English Teachers Can Help Fight AIDS in Africa” reports how English teachers can be social reformers through involvement in a writing project oriented toward marginalized people. She shares her own experience of working with Namibian women, an oppressed population, and her involvement in a grassroots writing project that assisted Namibian women in sharing their voices and life experiences through writing in English.

Grace Chin-Wen Chien’s “Issues Regarding Elementary School Teacher 20-Credit Courses in Taiwan and Their Implications for English Teacher Education” explores issues related to the elementary school English teacher education preparation programs in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context, specifically in Taiwan. She delves into the issues concerning prerequisite requirements for teachers enrolled in the 20-credit course, English teacher education program design, practicum, and the balance between theory and practice, and provides suggestions for improvement.

Angela Bell reviewed Collaboration and Co-teaching: Strategies for English Learners by A. Honigsfeld and M. G. Dove (2010). Through her examination of the book, Bell shares with us her insights on a collaborative approach that can well address the needs of English language learners. She especially emphasizes the value of the book to teachers who are entering the profession and being expected to collaborate.

One of the major intents of the TEIS Newsletter is to share your insights, perspectives, and expertise with folks who have interests and concerns similar to yours. Please feel free to share your voice with the TEIS community. If you are interested in submitting an article, contact me.
