ARTICLES TESOL GLOBAL MEMBERS ORIENTATION LAUNCHED IN JUNE! Anastasia Khawaja, Chair, Membership Professional Council, TESOL International Association
Did you know that the U.S. Department of State sponsors TESOL memberships across the globe? Since the pandemic, that number has grown from the 100s to the 1000s – roughly 6,000 for this year. With these many sponsored global memberships, it was important for TESOL to reach out to offer guidance and orientation about all the benefits that the TESOL International Association has to offer. Since February of this year, the TESOL Membership Professional Council (MPC), TESOL Executive Committee, TESOL Affiliate Professional Council (ANPC), and the RELO Washington D.C. office have met to discuss how best we can reach these members. Through these meetings, the MPC and ANPC started collaborating to develop a welcome webinar for our global members. In this webinar, we invited a RELO, an affiliate leader, and a previously sponsored global member to discuss how TESOL membership has been a benefit to them. On June 10th at both 8 am and 8 pm EST the councils, led by ANPC Chair, Bessie Karras-Lazaris and myself, Chair of the MPC, launched the webinars and were able to reach out to roughly 125 members. This webinar featured a wonderful presentation from TESOL Peru led by President Julio Gutierrez. In his talk, Mr. Gutierrez highlighted the important work done by TESOL Peru for educators in the region as well as the important connection and partnership that they and other affiliates enjoy with TESOL International Association. The webinar closed with an inspiring talk given by TESOL International Member and VietTESOL affiliate member Annie Ngyugen. It was a pleasure to listen to Annie detail her own TESOL journey as she discussed how she has been able to have presentation and professional development opportunities through TESOL International, her affiliate, and her RELO. Attendees of the webinar found it inspiring and helpful. One comment sums it up well. It would be great to be put into small groups to attend a webinar or online course so we can get to know each other, strike new friendships and come up with ways to work together. If you missed this webinar, stay tuned. The MPC and ANPC are planning our next webinar at the end of August and currently soliciting affiliate leaders, RELOs, and formerly sponsored U.S. State Department members to give presentations. Please reach out to ajkhawaja@usf.edu if you are interested in presenting and helping us forge new connections for TESOL, and local affiliates and RELOs.
