PEARLIE LUBIN AWARDED ALUMNI IMPACT AWARD

MaryLynn Patton, Dallas College & TexTESOL V

We, at TexTESOL V, are so proud of our Past-President, Pearlie Lubin. At TESOL 2023 in Portland, Pearlie was honored with the "Alumni Impact Award" from the English Language Programs. This impressive award honors Pearlie for her work in Costa Rica as a virtual educator for the US Department of State.

Pearlie began at the US Department of State Virtual Language Fellowship Program from 2020-2022. In her first year, she taught teaching methods and skills to in-service teachers who did not pass their English proficiency entrance exam at the National Learning Institute. Pearlie had them help design the course so that they could feel safe in their learning community. Each week Pearlie would collaborate with teachers from different regions to develop lessons based on their individual students.

In her second year, she worked with the STEAM students at Limon Technical High School with the Ministry of Public Education. Pearlie assisted these students as they worked on projects toward improving communication skills and self-esteem. The students weren't the only ones who were learning. Pearlie was able to learn about anime, emojis as assessments, and the culture of Limon, Costa Rica.

Beyond her work teaching virtually for the US Department of State, Pearlie has been an ESOL instructor at Dallas College in North Texas. She is currently a graduate teaching assistant at Dallas Theological Seminary and a doctoral candidate in the Higher Education and Learning Technologies program at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Because of her work and accomplishments in Costa Rica, Pearlie accepted the role of president-elect for our TexTESOL V affiliate from 2021-2022, president from 2022-2023, and is currently our past president. She has been instrumental in leading our affiliate through two pandemic years and planning virtual conferences as well as the TexTESOL State Conference. When asked what having an impact is, Pearlie said, "It's not just sharing the positive things we've done, but also the negative so others can do bigger and better things." This is something I can attest to. Pearlie has shared all parts of her learning to help "create positive ripples" in local Dallas/Forth Worth and around the world.

Pearlie has been an amazing asset on the board and in our community. When we learned about this prestigious award, we couldn't wait to share it with our other affiliate friends around the world of TESOL. Please join us in congratulating Pearlie and wishing her the best in all her future endeavors.
