Dear ICIS Members and Friends,
Greetings! I am anticipating seeing many of you in Portland,
just a few weeks away now! I am very excited for all that this
convention holds for interculturalists!
We have an exciting Academic Session and InterSection planned.
The title of the Academic Session is “TESOL as Intercultural
Communication,” with Ryuko Kubota, Ulla Connor, Don Snow, Gayle Nelson,
and Adrian Holliday presenting. The InterSection is “Developing
Intercultural Competence,” with Thomas Nakayama, Bonnie Norton, Adrian
Holliday, Joe McVeigh, and Amy Chastain speaking. Please see the sidebar
of the InterCom for the location and times for each.
We also have an article in this newsletter with the abstracts for these
sessions, so read on for a sneak peek of these exciting ICIS events in
Portland.
In addition to our Academic Session and InterSection, several
of you have wonderful presentations on timely intercultural
communication topics. Please search the convention itinerary planner for
all of the ICIS sessions.
As you might know, Portland is the site of the Intercultural
Communication Institute (see www.intercultural.org
for more information). Both Janet Bennett and Milton Bennett of ICI are
invited speakers for this year’s conference, and both of their
presentations promise to add a lot to the convention.
We would love to see you at our Business Meeting on Thursday,
March 27, 6:45–8:15 in Room B119. After the Business Meeting, we will
head out on the town together for our social at Farm Café at 10 SE 7th
Ave. (about five blocks from the Convention Center!) at 8:30. Please
join us!
Thank you, Kris, for working hard to put together another incredible newsletter for us!
I love this year’s Conference theme, “Explore, Sustain, Renew:
ELT for the Next Generation.” Looking ahead and dreaming of the future
for ELT isn’t complete without the work of interculturalists—so let us
explore, sustain, and renew together! I look forward to seeing many of
you in Portland!
Warmly,
Laura Jacob
