The senpai (senior)/kohai (junior) relationship is an essential aspect of Japanese culture that can be used in English language classes both inside and outside of Japan to enhance Japanese university students' motivation for learning and communicating in English. This article reveals how the senpai/kohai relationship helped rekindle first-year Japanese university students' motivation after the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in their university classes moving online.
