Dear Intercultural Communication members,

This issue of InterCom is our Summer 2022 post-convention edition! In store for you, we gathered reflections of our wonderful ICIS and MWIS colleagues who participated in the TESOL 2022 Convention either in-person or online.

In Sharon Tjaden-Glass’ reflection, she shares how reaffirming it was to reconnect with ICIS colleagues in person. She ends with an encouraging note about the dedication of TESOL members who ‘keep their compass pointed to True North, toward the learner’. Sharon also shares a link to materials made available by the panalists. Kendra Staley highlights the insights she gained through her participation in the ICIS-MWIS panel about Open Educational Resources (OERs), encouraging teachers to promote intercultural learning through OERs. Tracing how she came to participate in the ICIS-MWIS panel, Najma Janjua discusses the cultural and intercultural value that locally published textbooks from the Global South, can add to the development of OERs. In Ramin Yazdanpanah’s reflection, he describes the ICIS-MWIS panel as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with other TESOL colleagues and expresses gratitude to the TESOL community. Amina Douidi provides a summary of her presentation where she puts forward a proposal on how to write interculturally oriented materials. As for Leslie Bohan who attended the TESOL Convention, in-person, for the first time as an ICIS leadership member, she expresses her delight in finding a TESOL home in ICIS and shares photos of their work and play.

Put together, these reflections are a true testimony of the value of meeting up at the Convention where we can learn from and with others; where we as a community can inspire one another and push each other’s thinking. The TESOL ICIS team is already planning for the 2023 Convention which will take place in Portland, USA and online. We are continuing the tradition of collaborating with other intersections and engaging in even more exciting discussions to advance our understanding and practice of interculturality.

Also, in this issue, ICIS Co-Chairs Andrea Enikő Lypka and Barbara Lapornik share with us, in their letter, a summary of this year’s ICIS activities and few announcements of upcoming events.

Finally, we would love for you to join us! There are several ways to share and connect. ICIS holds informal “Coffee Hours,” offering intercultural enthusiasts, teachers and researchers, opportunities to broaden their professional networks and discuss intercultural matters in a friendly environment. In addition, the ICIS “Lightning Talks” have grown in popularity and become a stimulating platform for post-graduates to showcase their work in progress. So, do get in touch either through email or via our social media channels on LinkedInFacebook and Twitter.

Another way to connect with ICIS is to submit a piece to the ICIS newsletter. Share your insights or a lesson plan, experiences regarding intercultural learning, teaching intercultural competence or cultural exchange in your educational setting. Please see our Call for Submissions for links to the author guidelines. The next deadline is October 18th, 2022. Please email your submissions to newsletter.icis.tesol@gmail.com.

We trust you will enjoy the features in this newsletter. We hope the rest of the summer break brings you health and peace.
