Public Laws: S. 1338 / PL 111-306 / Accreditation of English-language-training programs passes

Signed by President Obama on December 14, 2010, the law amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to require that a nonimmigrant foreign student seeking to enter the United States to study at a language-training program enroll at a language program that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Secretary of Education.

The law provides for a specified 3-year exception to such requirement.

A copy of the final draft of the bill is available here:

If you plan to attend TESOL 2011, please join us for “Enrollment, Legislative, and Advocacy Updates for IEPs” on Thursday, March 17, 3 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. in Convention Center Room 208. The session will update U.S. IEPs on enrollment data and trends, on current legislation that impacts IEPs, on advocacy efforts under way, and on how individuals, including IEP teachers, can assist with advocacy efforts. The newly passed accreditation bill will be a special focus.
