LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Sarah Emory, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
Hello Everyone! Welcome to our first ITAIS Newsletter of 2020! This edition aims to support you with online opportunities to share resources and to learn from other international teaching assistant (ITA) professionals as well as promote ways for us to engage in meaningful conversations about resources and connections. This newsletter has some interesting reads for you, including a book review of the newly released A Transdisciplinary Approach to International Teaching Assistants: Perspectives from Applied Linguistics, which was edited by Shereen Bhalla and Stephen Looney (ITA Interest Section Chair 2017–2018). Our board liaison, Justin Shewell, has decided to share his view of how ITA Interest Section (IS) and ITA practitioners can continue to contribute to TESOL, how we integrate into the larger TESOL International Association, and how our work clearly integrates with The 6 Principles®. Caitlin Hamstra’s article is a thoughtful analysis of interviews with ITAs on the type of programming that benefits them, and, for me, the most interesting aspect is that the ITAs in her analysis are all individuals for which the TOEFL was waived. I also want to extend a warm welcome to our new coeditor, James Edward Coda, who will be starting for our next newsletter—slated for next May/June. Another reminder I’d like to share is that Diane Cotsonas, our web manager, has recently revamped and relocated the ITAIS website. Our website continues our tradition of supporting ITA practitioners who are both members of TESOL and those who are not members. I look forward to engaging in conversations about this edition of the ITAIS Newsletter as well as hearing your ideas and proposals for our next edition. Sarah Emory ITAIS Newsletter Editor |
