LEADERSHIP UPDATES

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Laura Shier, Lewis & Clark College, Academic Studies, Oregon, USA

TESOL 2023 has come and gone! It was a pleasure to have it in my hometown of Portland, Oregon and to see so many colleagues from around the world share ideas on current trends and issues in our field. So many professionals demonstrate the importance of staying relevant in today’s world by sharing their expertise with technology in the classroom and addressing topics and strategies around equitable access and justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI).

Contributions to this issue of the newsletter focus on aspects of leading as a program director. These include tips on encouraging and supporting professional development for faculty and staff, and an article examining leadership skills in the military and how they can translate to the field of language teaching.

Laura Shier is the director of Academic English Studies at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She holds a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on TESOL. Since 1998, she has worked in the English language education field as an instructor, teacher trainer, and administrator in higher education in the U.S., Poland, and the U.K.
