For the fifth year in a row (Seattle, 2007; New York City,
2008; Denver, 2009; Boston, 2010), Friends of Second Language Writing
will gather after the SLWIS open business meeting to celebrate advances
in the field of second language writing, to renew acquaintances, to form
new research alliances, and to welcome new members into the discipline.
The event—An Evening with Friends of Second Language Writing―a
juxtaposition of the social and the academic—is highly anticipated by
many TESOL attendees, some calling it the highlight of their TESOL
convention experience. What is more, the event has lived up to its
promise to increase awareness of the significance of writing in teaching
ESL/EFL. It has also provided participants with the opportunity to
discuss second language writing and writers from the multiple and
diverse perspectives of a group of scholars whose collective experience
of researching and teaching second language writers spans a wide
spectrum of interests. Finally, the Evening has helped to create a
friendly and informal environment in which those concerned with second
language writing can interact, exchange ideas, and build relationships
in order to further the field of second language writing.
Please mark your calendar for this important and enjoyable
event at TESOL 2011 in New Orleans on Thursday, March 17, 2011. Stop by
the TESOL IS Networking Booth on Thursday afternoon or come to the SLWIS
open business meeting later that day for details and directions. We
look forward to seeing our Friends in the Big Easy.
