TESOL 2015 PREVIEWS SLWIS SPECIAL SESSIONS AT TESOL 2015
In addition to dozens of SLWIS presentations, roundtables, and other sessions, the SLWIS will be sponsoring several special sessions as well as its annual meeting and a social event. Please mark your calendars for the following sessions, and be sure to stop by (and sign up for!) the SLWIS booth in the Exhibit Hall to keep updated on the exact details of all SLWIS events. All sessions listed below are held in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Academic Session In this academic session, experts who have anchored and inspired research in second language writing will share best practices in SLW pedagogy that are research based. A mix of theoretical and practical perspectives will be examined, including genre analysis, systemic functional linguistics and genre pedagogy, corpus linguistics, and error analysis. Miller, Nigel Caplan InterSection With English as a Foreign Language IS The presenters share their experiences in SLW practice and research in global contexts including Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. The presenters will discuss best practices in SLW pedagogy and research projects that are influenced by contextual factors such as medium of instruction, culture, and politics. Organizers: Vania Rodrigues (EFLIS), Carol Barreto (EFLIS), Silvia Pessoa (SLWIS) InterSection With Adult Education IS Panelists present the latest research and applications pertaining to ESL writing instruction, standards, and assessment in adult education. Various ESL writing theories, approaches, and models are discussed, and the merits and drawbacks are outlined. Best practices for adult ESL programs and classroom teachers are shared. Organizers: Ingrid Greenberg (AEIS), Silvia Pessoa (SLWIS) InterSection With Computer-Assisted Language Learning IS This InterSection will address the challenges and opportunities facing instructors’ integration of automated writing evaluation in the second language classroom. The panelists will discuss their experiences with the use of automated writing evaluation in second language learning and the pedagogical implications of its use. SLWIS Open Meeting At the annual SLWIS Open Meeting, members and friends of SLWIS come together to discuss the past year’s events, plan for next year’s TESOL convention, and explore options for events in the upcoming year. Come join in on the discussion! Social Event: An Evening With Friends of Second Language Writing Friends of Second Language Writing will gather after the SLWIS Open Meeting to celebrate advances in the field of second language writing, renew acquaintances, form new research alliances, and welcome new members into the discipline. Stop by the SLWIS booth in the exhibit hall or attend the SLWIS Open Meeting to get maps and other information about this informal gathering.
