LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Elena Shvidko, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, USA

Greetings, SLWIS Members!

Happy 2020! We are looking forward to another exciting year in our second language writing community.

First of all, we share our sadness with the cancelation of the 2020 TESOL Convention, and we surely appreciate the thoughtfullness of the executive council as we know it was not an easy decision to make. We hope that you and your loved ones are safe. Please stay connected with our professional community and follow updates through our Facebook page.

In this issue, Second Language Writing Interest Section (SLWIS) Chair Betsy Gilliland describes how SLWIS members can participate in book club discussions organized by the members of the SLWIS steering committee. We encourage you to be a part of our book club—it will give you the opportunity to not only participate in interesting conversations with other members of the club but also interact with book authors in live discussions.

This issue features two articles. Ilka Kostka provides helpful suggestions on how to publish in TESOL newsletters. Ilka has just finished her service as managing coeditor of SLW News, and we are very grateful for the wonderful work she has done for the newsletter during the time of her service. Elena Shvidko shares several projects that can be implemented in a writing course to help students write for audiences beyond the classroom.

In our regular section, Graduate Student Spotlights, we feature Saurabh Anand, a graduate student in the MA TESOL program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Saurabh describes his research and teaching interests and shares his experience of learning to write in academic settings in India and the United States. We always enjoy hearing from graduate students, so if you are a master’s or doctoral student and would like to contribute to this section of SLW News, please contact Elena Shvidko for more information.

We also like to hear about pedagogical resources and research materials you use in your professional activities. If you have read a recently published book on second language writing or used a second language writing textbook in your course and would like to submit a review on this resource, contact our book review editor Steven Bookman for more information.

Our next issue will be published in October 2020. We encourage you to share your pedagogical and scholarly experience with our professional community. The deadline for submissions is 30 June. For more information, please have a look at the Submission Guidelines in this issue.

Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Elena Shvidko
