Greetings! I’m pleased to share with you the latest edition of On CALL. This preconvention special issue is packed
with information about Electronic Village (EV) events at the Seattle
TESOL convention as well as some articles that explore pedagogy and
teaching using computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Make sure you
see the sidebar or here for the EV
Program, which Mr. Justin Shewell, a former chair, has put into a
searchable PDF version. Here is the link for the online version.
I’d like to thank my contributors in reverse order so I can
recognize our most active contributor: Ms. Suzan Stamper. Suzan, a
senior lecturer and English language team leader at Yew Chung Community
College in Hong Kong (and longtime newsletter editor), continues to pull
in articles in her 10th anniversary Making Connections column. In this
issue, she introduces to CALL-ISers some familiar faces who have moved
on to other positions in TESOL. Also in this issue, another familiar
face is Helaine W.
Marshall, of Long Island University/Hudson, writing about
“Flipped Learning in a Linguistics Class.” Additionally, I’d like to
thank Jack Watson, the 2016 TESOL CALL-IS chair and ELP e-learning
coordinator at the University
of New Brunswick English Language Programme, for his steady
leadership over all things related to CALL-IS. This year looks to be a
year of great change for CALL-IS and TESOL as well. Jack has carefully
navigated these waters with a steady hand. His first mate, Claudio
Fleury, the 2017 TESOL CALL-IS chair-elect and supervisor of the
advanced adult and ESP courses at Casa Thomas Jefferson in Brasília, has
also been active in CALL-IS for many years. Please take some time to
read both of their letters to find out more about some of the new
directions that TESOL is considering.
Even if you can’t make it to the convention, there are a wide
variety of ways to stay active professionally. If you haven’t already,
please make sure you see the sidebar in this issue for links to the EV
Program, which Mr. Justin Shewell, a former chair, has put into a searchable PDF version. Follow the CALL-IS and Electronic Village
events at the TESOL Convention 2017 on our Facebook Page, TESOL CALL
Interest Section and follow us on Twitter.
If there is something that you would like to see in our
newsletter or if you’d like to join the newsletter team, contact me.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon,
