LEADERSHIP UPDATES

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

James Whiting, Plymouth State University, Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA

Welcome to the Summer, 2022 issue of the Teacher Education Interest Section (TEIS) Newsletter.

The TEIS is led by a dynamic and committed team, myself, James Whiting (Chair); Heather Linville, (Chair-Elect); Polina Vinogradova, (Chair Elect-Elect); Abdulsamad Humaidan, (Community Manager); and of course our indefatigable newsletter dynamic duo, Khanh-Duc Kuttig and Bridget Schvarcz.

This year the TEIS leadership team is working to host a full slate of compelling and varied webinars. By the time you read this, we will have hosted three webinars, one on a new journal, Second Language Teacher Education; another on using TESOL’s website as a resource in teacher education courses, and a discussion on representation in teacher-education content and materials.

Upcoming this fall and next winter, we’ll host talks onLanguage and Social Justice; Pragmatics in Teacher Education; Culturally Responsive Teaching in TESOL Teacher Education; and Using Authentic Writing in the Teacher Education Classroom. We hope you’ll keep an eye on the email lists and plan to join us for these talks.

At our business meeting in Pittsburgh, I said that I’d like this year ahead to be one where TEIS, with over two thousand members, could tap into our deep collective expertise and share with the group our work, our TESOL passions. We hope that you’ll be part of this conversation and consider presenting a webinar on your work, or on an area you are passionate about. Please reach out to me or any of the leadership team and let us know. This is your IS, so let’s make it a group project!

We hope you enjoy this amazing newsletter with articles themed around teacher knowledge. Please mark your calendars and join TEIS for a townhall event in mid-August when we’ll discuss articles from this newsletter. The townhall will be led by the newsletter editors and include some of the writers featured here. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more, hear from the authors directly and have a chance to ask those questions you had while reading their pieces. Finally, it's a great way to connect with other TEIS members.

Finally, we encourage you to join us on social media. Please visit the TEIS Facebook page; you can find it at Teacher Education—a TESOL Interest Section. The TEIS Twitter handle is @TESOL_TEIS. These are wonderful ways to stay connected to TEIS.
