Dear ALIS Community,

We sincerely hope this message finds you and your loved ones well, and that you were able to recharge during the summer.

The ALIS co-chairs would like to invite you to participate in several upcoming online events happening this Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.

First, it is with great pleasure that we announce that the panelists who were going to participate in our academic session at the TESOL 2020 Convention in Denver have agreed to hold webinars instead, making a total of four webinars for the Applied Linguistics Interest Section (ALIS) webinar series.

The original theme for the TESOL 2020 ALIS academic session was “Multifaceted Teacher Identities: Perspectives on Language, Race, and Professional Positioning,” and this will continue to be the theme for our webinars.

On 24 July, we had the pleasure of offering our first webinar in the series, featuring Dr. Quanisha Charles. She shared with us her experiences and research in a presentation titled “Black Teachers of English in South Korea: Constructing Identities as a Black Native English Speaker and English Language Teaching Professional.” If you missed this webinar, you will be able to find a recording on TESOL’s Youtube Channel.

The upcoming three webinars are:

We are also planning a series of “ALIS Q&A with Experts” to which we will invite authors who have recently published in TESOL Quarterly. During these sessions, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions about the articles or about the authors’ work and research in general.

So, stay tuned for updates on our upcoming webinars and “ALIS Q&A with Experts” sessions, which will be posted on the myTESOL ALIS page and on our Facebook page.

Finally, we are excited to report that Anna Dina Joaquin (California State University, Northridge) is our chair-elect. She has been very involved in ALIS’s activities this year and is already planning an academic session for the 2021 TESOL Convention. We are very happy to be working with her.

Looking forward to seeing you in one of our events this year!

All the best,

Bahiyyih, Polina, and Anna
