LEADERSHIP UPDATES LETTER FROM THE EDITORS Natalia Dolgova, George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA Heather Weger, Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC, USA
Welcome to the fall issue of AL Forum, newsletter for the TESOL Applied Linguistics Interest Section! As we kick off an unusual 2020–2021 academic year, we first want to send our warmest wishes for your well-being and health during this challenging time. As we strive to continue providing exceptional research-informed perspectives, we do so with heightened recognition that we execute our teaching platforms in a socially and temporally specific context. We hope that the articles included in this issue help propel you to consider some of the implications of the times we live in. We begin with the article by Andy Curtis, former president of TESOL, who presents an updated view of peace linguistics in light of current events. Our second article, authored by co-chair Polina Vinogradova, outlines a collaborative approach toward action research, an approach especially suitable for the online and hybrid teaching contexts in which many of us have unexpectedly found ourselves. In the third article, Danièle Allard and Riichiro Mizoguchi report on their strategy for helping learners discern verb tense patterns common in time clauses. The final piece is our own addition to the issue highlighting a few teaching tips and resources that might be particularly relevant for you in the circumstances of online and hybrid teaching. In leadership updates, Co-chairs Bahiyyih Hardacre and Polina Vinogradova and Chair-Elect Anna Dina Joaquin share the enriching professional development events available to you. First, their letter includes information about a series of webinars based on the originally planned TESOL 2020 panel, “Multifaceted Teacher Identities: Perspectives on Language, Race, and Professional Positioning.” They also announce an upcoming “ALIS Q&A with Experts” series that will feature authors who have recently published in TESOL Quarterly. We hope you enjoy this issue and wish you well as acadmic year 2020–2021 gets underway! Cheers, Natalia and Heather Note: To provide feedback on this newsletter, please click the envelope graphic on the side bar, which links to a TESOL survey. |
