Having a culturally diverse group of university
students facilitated the design of an Intercultural Communication class
as a living laboratory for improving intercultural communication skills.
Students from several cultural backgrounds gained intercultural
awareness and discovered together how collectivism and individualism,
direct and indirect communication, high-context and low-context
communication, and face and harmony can affect interactions in and out
of the classroom. This article focuses on two techniques—simulated
cultural immersion activities and group presentations—and the benefits

classes want to explore social behaviors of their new or host country.
However, program materials often provide little beyond general cultural
concepts. To bridge the gap, I bring surveys from newspapers and
