The use of deixis, a linguistic element that carries referential meaning, is examined to reveal the difference in strategic communication between intracultural and intercultural speakers. Intercultural interlocutors, who cannot assume shared sociocultural frames, conventions, and egocentric communicative norms, used deixis more elaborately and distinctively to co-construct common ground in contexts.
