For a list of SLWIS sessions, please see the Second Language Writing section of the TESOL 2016 Itinerary Planner. All sessions listed below will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center. ACADEMIC SESSION In this academic session, experts in the study of genre discuss reasons and ways for teachers to incorporate genre when teaching writing. From multiple theoretical perspectives, the presenters discuss applications of genre theory, aspects of genre to consider, and strategies for using genre approaches in teaching writing. Organizers: Ryan Miller and Silvia Pessoa INTERSECTION with Secondary Schools IS Students write throughout high school, yet postsecondary writing may differ considerably. This panel considers transitions from high school writing to writing in higher education or the workplace. Panelists discuss students’ perspectives on writing expectations, common issues faced when adjusting to academic discourse, and writing development for career transitions. Organizers: Ryan Miller (SLWIS) and Sarah Moore (SSIS) INTERSECTION with Higher Education IS ELLs learn writing at various stages in their development, yet objectives vary. This panel discusses the approaches of schools, IEPs, writing programs, and college content classes toward writing. Panelists discuss key elements from their perspectives as well as successful strategies for aligning objectives to ensure smoother transitions for students. Organizers: Abby Franchitti (HEIS), T. Leo Schmitt (HEIS), and Ryan Miller (SLWIS) INTERSECTION with Adult Education IS and Refugee Concerns IS Adult students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) in their first language face many challenges as they work toward literacy in English. Researchers and practitioners come together to discuss instructional needs, with special emphasis on learning to write. Participants gain connections to SLIFE research as well as instructional techniques. Organizers: Jill Morin (AEIS), Heather Tatton-Harris (RCIS), and Ryan Miller (SLWIS) ADDITIONAL EVENTS If you are a member of the SLWIS leadership team, are interested in joining the team, or want to learn more about projects we have in the works, please attend our steering committee meeting. SLWIS Open Meeting At the annual Open Meeting, members and friends of SLWIS come together to discuss the past year’s events, plan for next year’s TESOL convention, and explore options for events in the upcoming year. Come join in on the discussion! Social Event: An Evening With Friends of Second Language Writing Following the SLWIS Open Meeting, we will gather to celebrate advances in the field of second language writing, to renew acquaintances, to form new research alliances, and to welcome new members into the discipline. Stop by the SLWIS booth in the Exhibit Hall or attend the Open Meeting to get maps and other information about this informal gathering organized by Friends of Second Language Writing. A special thanks to this year's sponsors: Parlor Press Series on Second Language Writing, Symposium on Second Language Writing, and Members of the SLWIS Steering Committee.
