As English is spreading globally, native speakers of English
are increasingly exposed to speakers of World Englishes (WEs). While WE
speakers are trying to gain knowledge and skills to communicate with
native speakers, native speakers are rarely encouraged to learn to
understand WE speakers (Kubota, 2001). This article describes the
effects of a pilot course in addressing such need for native speakers to

connections with each other. In 2009–2010 the Norwegian–American
